Twilight Sparkle receives an invitation to the wedding of her brother, Shining Armor, to Princess Mi Amore Cadenza, cousin to Princesses Celestia and Luna. At first doubtful and hurt over not being told of the wedding in person, Twilight soon warms up to the marriage when she finds out Mi Amore Cadenza is actually Princess Cadence, the princess that used to foal sit for her when she was a filly. Her suspicions come creeping right back in when Cadence doesn't recognize her, acts snooty to Twilight's friends, who have all agreed to help with the wedding, and mysteriously gets rid of all of her bridesmaids. Is Cadence who she claims to be? Is Twilight just being over possessive of her brother? Will this Season Finale tide us over until Season 3? Read on to find out.
This should come as no surprise, but this recap contains MAJOR spoilers, so if you haven't seen the finale yet, PLEASE do so before continuing. This episode deserves to unfold for everyone organically.
I have been an active fan of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic since January of this year. Since then, I have seen every episode of the series multiple times (They are all protected on my DVR at home, so they don't disappear on me.) My favorite episode has been The Last Roundup from the moment I watched it, with The Return Of Harmony Parts 1 and 2 coming in a very close second. Well, I have a new favorite.
A Canterlot Wedding hit every note a Season Finale should, and then some. It brought a well written story, fun moments for all of the main characters, a more rich back story with the introductions of Shining Armor and Cadence, a new villian type in the form of Changelings and their evil Queen Chrysalis (More on them in a bit,) and a beautiful sendoff to end the season. I have to admit, my expectations for the finale were running a little high due to the advertising barrage The Hub unleased for it, and I was afraid of being disappointed. These fears were totally unfounded. Enough talk, lets look at some pictures!
Shining Armor, Twilight Sparkle's brother, performing his duties as Captain of the Royal Guard.
Princess Cadence, looking like every teenage girl from the 80's ever.
Seeing as this is an episode about a wedding, it only makes sense that the story revolves around the Bride and Groom. Shining Armor is shown early on to be completely dedicated to his job, protecting Canterlot from any threat. He's confident, and carries an air of authority about him that commands respect. Princess Cadence is shown in flashbacks to have a rather unique gift: The ability to spread love where ever she goes. However, the Cadence that greets Twilight when she arrives to help with the wedding seems nothing like she remembers.
We are treated to an example of Cadence's ability and a Sibsy OC Appearance
Now for a picture dump of Twilight, cause these as much her episodes as Shining Armor's and Cadence's.
Sandwich Puppet is Best Talking Food Product.
Filly Twilight = Adorkable levels over 18,000 (That's over 9,000 TWICE!)
I must admit, this is pretty much my smug face when I'm right.
I now know what a heart breaking feels like.
Dumb friends, don't believe me when I'm right.
Eventually, everyone sides with Cadence, and Twilight is forced to see how selfish and possessive she is acting toward her brother, and tries to apologize to Cadence.
A simple "I can't accept your apology," would have sufficed.
Twilight wakes up in a cave, discovering that Cadence really IS evil, and has imprisoned her here to keep her away from the wedding. In her desperate attempt to escape, Twilight runs into a rather familiar looking alicorn.
She has clearly seen better days.
The REAL Princess Cadence explains that the one that captured Twilight was an imposter, and that they desperately need to reach the surface. This leads into a villian song that easily rivals Disney for sheer quality.
Before they can escape though, Twilight and Cadence must get past the fake's ZOMBIE BRIDESMAIDS! (Cause, you know, this is a little girl's show.)
That's right, Lyra, Colgate, and Unnamed Pony are under the imposter's spell! But no spell is as strong as the urge to catch the bouquet, apparently.
Did, did we just watch Lyra, Colgate, and Unnamed Pony die?
No time to waste, we have a wedding to stop! With the vows almost complete, Twilight and the real Princess Cadence call shenanigans on the imposter, revealing that she is actually the Changeling Queen, Chrysalis!
Oh, that's cool Hasbro, I didn't plan to sleep tonight anyway.
The Changeling Queen reveals that she has been stealing Shining Armor's strength and love, causing him to not be able to protect Canterlot, which will allow her changelings to devour all the love and happiness and become even more powerful. Again, show for little girls here.
Seriously, who's her character designer? Tim Burton?
For the first time in the entire run of the series, who steps up to protect everyone but mother buckin Princess Celestia!
This was like the first time you get to see Yoda wield a Light Sabre.
Unfortunately, the love Chrysalis had been stealing from Shining Armor was so strong, not even CELESTIA can stand up to her.
I repeat: Little. Girl's. Show.
Cue the Mane Six going after the Elements Of Harmony, surely their friendship will overcome Chrysalis's evil ways! What follows is an epic battle between the Mane Six and a horde of Changelings, that has to be seen to be believed.
Just call her Rainbow Smash!
The girl makes a living kicking apple trees day in and day out. What chance does a changeling have?
Oh Fluttershy, you're such a speed bump.
You know, for a Pony obsessed with fashion and high society, Rarity has a MEAN right cross.
HADOKEN!
And then it dawned on Pinkie: The Party Cannon can double as a Cannon Cannon!
Epic.
As valiant an effort as the girls put in, though, they are soon over taken by the sheer number of changelings. They are brought back to Chrysalis, who begins to gloat over her victory. But there is one thing she never counted on: The Power of Love.
The Power of Love, is a curious thing. It makes one man weak, another man sing. ( I am so sorry, I couldn't help myself.)
Cadence adds here power to Shining Armor's protection spell, and the two manage to push all of the changelings out of Canterlot. After a brief celebration, everyone gets to work on the REAL wedding.
In the end, we learn that love conquers all. We also learn a valuable lesson about trusting our instincts. Twilight was suspicious from the very start about "Princess Mi Amore Cadenza," but begins to doubt herself when her friends and family distance themselves from her over it. However, her dedication to her brother allows her to save Cadence, and all of Canterlot.
I hope you've enjoyed my recap of A Canterlot Wedding, I had a blast watching it and writing this for you all. While I am sad that the season has drawn to a close, I am comforted in how strong the season finale was, and I can't wait for Season 3. As always, I leave you with random pics from the finale.
Confetti Sneeze
Ah didn't know it was tacky to wear a hat to a weddin'.
CUTIE MARK CRUSADER FLOWER PETAL DISTRIBUTORS! YAY!
Now Kiss 2: Electric Boogaloo
Pinkie Pie is wielding Twilight. Your argument is SO invalid.
Words can't describe how much I loved this scene.
Oooh, girl, it just got awkward up in here!
Bridezilla Begins
It's not a party without Vinyl Scratch! (Oh, and Pinkie Pie)
So The Last Roundup used to be your favourite? Well for me it still remains my favourite, though the season finale, particularly the second half, was mind-blowing.
You highlight most of the highlights, though not the two that shocked me the most (Twilight seemingly burning to death and Rainbow Dash kissing Fluttershy on the nose) but have a done a decent job considering how many awesome scenes were in this two part finale. Not much analysis but a great re-cap all the same with plenty of witty comments to go with the screen caps. I was both giggling and grinning as I read through this post.
Quick question, you seemingly state A Canterlot Wedding as your favourite episode but which part? Is A Canterlot Wedding part 1 your favourite or A Canterlot Wedding part 2? Cheerio!
Very good review.
ReplyDeleteHehe, I also heard the "power of love" when I saw that scene.
Hey, you used my "This Day Aria" video :D
